Rochdale Supporters FC came out of the first local
derby of the season with the 3 points well and truly in
the bag after a resounding 5-1 success at neighbours
Bury. Dale made the short trip to Goshen after a weeks
break in the fixtures so they were well rested and up
for this game. There was just one change to the side
that beat Chester 10-0 with Mark Woodall replacing the
absent Kaminskas.
It didn't take long for Rochdale to take the lead. A
great ball over the top was raced onto by Liam Ratcliffe
who had time to measure his effort and superbly lifted
it over the Bury goalkeeper to give Dale an early lead.
It wasn't long before it was 2-0 after the ball landed
at Rob Flitcrofts feet in the box he swivelled and shot
and it somehow ended up going under the keeper and into
the bottom corner.
Soon
afterwards there was a glorious chance to make it 3-0.
The subs on the sideline were already celebrating when
Woodall squared to Flitcroft in front of an open net but
he put it wide. An early, non Mark Woodall frontrunner
for the Mark Woodall miss of the season award! It was
3-0 soon after though and this time it was Woodall who
finished excellently into the bottom corner after being
played through.
The half time team talk was mainly concentrating on
getting the job finished and not celebrating too early.
If there were any doubts they were pretty much over when
Paul Veevers collected the ball just inside the box and
upon seeing few options he expertly curled the ball into
the far corner ala Chris Dagnall later on in the
afternoon! Bury then had their best spell of the game
but they still didn't really create too much.
Liam
Ratcliffe could have had a few more goals after beating
the offside trap many times but he couldn't beat the
keeper. Then for miss of the season number 2. A long
ball over the top towards Woodall was gambled on and the
keeper duly made a mess of it leaving him with an open
goal to tap the ball into when he inexplicably put it a
good 6 yards wide! Just when you think the award may be
won by someone else he comes back and tops the previous
effort!
Ryan Higginbotham made it 5-0 when he cut inside and hit
it back across goal into the bottom corner leaving the
keeper with no chance. It could/should have been 6-0
when substitute Hudson squared for Ratcliffe to tap in
but it was strangely given offside and Bury then got a
goal of their own after 2 subs sandwiched the striker in
the box a penalty was awarded and duly dispatched.
The team were disappointed to concede but make no
mistakes, this was a superb win over a team that
regularly finishes in the top 3 of the league. Dale now
have a weeks break to recover before the long trip down
to Barnet.
