The Rochdale Supporters Team was
formed way back in 1992. They played their first game at
home against Darlington which was won 2-1 and since that
date the team has gone from strength to strength. The
team continued to play regularly until the 1996/97
season when they began to get coverage in the Rochdale
Observer. In the 96/97 season the team narrowly failed
to win the Third division supporters league. They needed
to win their final game against Carlisle to win the
league but the Carlisle squad contained 4
ex-professionals including John Gorman and John Halpin
who both scored. However Dale managed a very impressive
3-3 draw but it was only enough to see them come second
in the league.
The team continued to impress in
coming seasons and in 1997/98 they won 11 consecutive
games, a run which is yet to be beaten.
Over the next few
years the team carried on playing games despite the lack
of a league at this time. At times it was difficult to
get 11 players to travel to long distance games like
Leyton Orient but since 2004 the club has made great
strides on and off the pitch.
An influx of players during the
2004/05 season saw Dale lose just 1 game that year. They
started the following season in the same fashion and by
January 2006 they had joined the very competitive
Internet Football Association league which opened the
door to a whole host of new teams to play. Despite only
joining the league in January, the team managed to play
12 games, winning 11 and drawing 1.
So many of our local rival
supporter's teams, many nowhere near as old as Rochdale
had surpassed the club off the pitch, so the club set up
its first website and started to build connections in
order to catch up. By this time the team were playing in
a kit well over 10 years old but thanks to the
generosity of the Dale supporters trust the squad could
line up for the 2006/07 season in a brand new kit.
The season was just as successful on
the pitch as well. The team finished 10th in
the IFA League and in May 2007 the team picked up its
first piece of silverware when they won the very
competitive Merseyside Tournament. They also reached the
final of another major tournament in Preston in July but
unfortunately couldn't repeat their success of 2 months
previous.
But the foundations are now laid for
a very successful 2007/08 season with hopes high of a
good league finish and hopefully some more silverware.
And with any luck the fact that you may be reading this
on the official website of Rochdale AFC as well as here
means the club has even more connections to compete with
its rival supporter's teams off and on the pitch.
