Preston 2 Rochdale

14/10/2006 |
Rochdale went
into this game knowing it was going to be a hard fought
game. The game was the first round of the IFA cup, if
it was a draw after 90 mins the game would have gone
straight to penalties. Rochdale would have to be at
their best to beat the defending cup holders.
Manager Mark
Woodall was able to name an unchanged side for the 3rd
game in a row.
The game itself
was end to end, but both defences where on top and there
were very few scoring chances for either team.
After about 20
mins Ste Crossley floated an excellent free kick over
into Preston’s 18 yard box. Top scorer Kaminskas headed
the ball towards goal; unfortunately the ball ended up
in the Preston goalkeepers hands.
The next piece
of action came in the Rochdale box. Preston with a good
move down the left crossed the ball into one of their
forward, who turned and shot towards goal. The shot
took a slight deflection off a defender, which was
enough for the ball to beat Jon in goal.
Chances came and
went for both sides but no clear cut scoring ones.
At half time
Rochdale were 1 nil down. Mark could only ask the
players to keep doing the same and the goal would come.
The second half
started with both teams creating a few more chances.
Preston hit the crossbar. Rochdale were getting closer
making Preston’s keeper pull off a few good saves.
Rochdale
equalised on about the hour mark. With good solid
defending as Preston attacked the ball broke to Milnes
who carried the ball 25 yards before playing it into the
path of Kaminskas. Kaminskas carried the ball to the
edge of Preston’s box before crossing to Luke Lloyd to
finish in the bottom corner. 1-1
Rochdale were
clearly on top and pressing for a winner. With about 15
mins left in the game Prestons right winger was sent off
for a second yellow card. This seemed to change the
game, Preston came back into it. With about 10 mins
left Preston got a free kick which was hit toward goal.
Luke Evans who was covering the post unfortunately
couldn’t keep to ball out of the net. Preston 2
Rochdale 1.
Rochdale chucked
everything at Preston including the kitchen sink but
were unable to get the equaliser.
This was a very
close and hard fought game, which ended with Rochdale
being on the wrong side of a 2-1 result and being
knocked out of the IFA at the first round.
